Founded in the 17th century on a rocky terrain, Antananarivo is the political, economic, educational and cultural heart of Madagascar. Two forts watch over the city, while within the 1.6 million metropole lay royal palaces, many NGO headquarters, diplomatic missions and over fifty places of worship from different faiths. The former French colonial city most prominent feature may be the remains of the Queen's Palace (Rova), located on a hill. Its steep stairways and alleys make “Tana” a challenging but rewarding city to explore on foot.More Information
”The city of much salt” is located in Madagascar’s central highlands and emerged as a wellness town around the thermal springs in the early 19th century when Scandinavian missionaries built a spa here (still in use to this day). French colonists then built the numerous colonial villas and the wide boulevards. Today Madagascar’s third largest city is famous for its rather cool climate and the high concentration of pulled rickshaws.More Information
